Kayak/canoe sprint 31.05.2010

Canoe sprint, which is referred to by the IOC as «canoe/kayak sprint», is one of the two forms of the canoeing disciplines that are featured in the Summer Olympics, the other being canoe slalom. Canoe sprint has been part of the Olympic Games since 1936 (Berlin) for men, and since 1948 (London) for women. Other forms of canoe and kayak sprint, such as whitewater racing, extreme racing, dragon boat racing and outrigger canoe racing, are practised on white water and/or use quite different boats and paddles.

History of development, our sport has changed very much: at first sewn from solid leather, and then canvas and wooden rowing boats gradually gave way to the clinker, plywood, mahogany, and now plastic kayaks and canoes. Boats speed increased immeasurably.

Rowers from different generations keep a heritage of the longtime glorious traditions. And that is the reason of the permanent success of our teams in international waters. The first canoeing competition was held on the Malaya Nevka in 1871. The first start of our national team took place in the XV Olympic regatta (1952, Helsinki).

The Russian national team debuted at the European Championship in 1957 in Ghent, at the World Championships – a year later in Prague.

The USSR national team brilliantly won the Olympic regatta in 1956 in Melbourne. Since that time the Soviet rowers started to compete for the leadership in the world. It led to the creation of fundamentally new Soviet school of rowing and canoeing, not based on blind copying of the best foreign samples, but on the creative use of (in each case) original domestic developments on rowing technique and flexible tactics of racing. Rowing and canoeing became very popular in the USSR in the 80s of the 20th century.

The USSR national team had 12 victories in the team event at the 14 World Championships. 110 USSR rowers are the World and the Continental Champions.
