"KSFEI team advanced to quarterfinals of European Universities Volleyball Championship"

The Economist women’s KSFEI (Kazan State Finance and Economics Institute) volleyball team finished the group stage of the championship as leaders of the C subgroup.

Today the participants of the X European Universities Volleyball Championship that had kicked off in Warsaw on July, 22 completed the group play and approached the playoffs.

The Championship drew the 25 team entrants from 13 European nations. In fact the tournament started with a spectacular parade in Warsaw when young volleyball players in university kits and with national flags in their hands marched through the heart of the Polish capital to the Chopin Academy of Music where the opening ceremony and a concert show took place.

The Kazan players pulled off a decent performance, they made it through to the quarterfinals without defeat. They beat the Spanish players of the University of Almeria (3-0) and the French athletes from the University of Haute-Alsace (3-1). They lost just one set in two matches. There are no matches to be played in Warsaw today. The participants of the Championship will use the break in the competition for getting conditioned to the final matches of the tournament. It should be noted that the next match the KSFEI team will have will be far from easy – the players from Kazan will face the University of Warsaw which will get a big support of local fans.

The men’s team of Mordva State University representing Russia at the Championship also succeeded to get into the playoffs without defeat.

In 2010 the Economist volleyball players placed first in the Russian student volleyball league among women’s teams of top division. Last year for the first time the KSFEI team entered the European Universities Championship that was held in Hamburg.
