Student badminton comes to Kazan Tennis Academy 13.02.2012

Five nail-biting days of badminton are ahead of student athletes at the All-Russian University Badminton Championship which will run in the Kazan Tennis Academy between February 15 and 19

The competition will gather over 100 badminton players from Moscow, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, perm, Chelyabinsk, Primosrky Territory, Novosibirsk, Krasnodar, Biysk and Kolomna. Ten student athletes will compete at the championship under the colours of the Republic of Tatarstan: Victoria and Grigory Vorobyevs (Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism), Pavel Fomin, Vadim Zhuravlev, Timur Safin, Olga Trofimova, Olga Belova, Vesta Shevchenko, Anna Davydova and Nadezhda Gorokhova.

Men’s and women’s team finals are scheduled for February 16, while singles and mixed doubles finals will take place on February 19.

Among the honorary guests expected to be present at the tournament are President of the National Badminton Federation Supervisory Board and BWF Council Member Sergey Shakhray and Chairman of the National Badminton Federation Council Andrey Andropov.

Tatarstan’s top badminton players had a successful season start. Victoria Vorobyeva won both the doubles and mixed doubles events at the 23rd edition of theYonex BWF World Badminton Championships which took place in Poland in late January.

Currently Vorobyeva occupies the highest place among Tatarstan’s badminton players in the Russian badminton rankings. As of December 2012, she ranks 24th, followed by Olga Trofimova (35), Nadezhda Gorokhova (77), Natalya Trofimova (78).

As for male badminton players, Pavel Fomin is the best one among Tatarstan’s student athletes, followed by Grigory Vorobyev (51) and Vadim Zhuravlev (84).
