Pool play games of European Universities Beach Volleyball Championship were played today 07.07.2010

The pool play games of the VII European Universities Beach Volleyball Championship were played on Wednesday in Kazan.

Day 2 started with the match of the women’s teams of Moscow Institute of Business and Law (Russia) and the University of Warsaw (Poland) on the central court. Victoria and Daria took the lead from the beginning of the game and upset the competitors with a 2-0 score. The second win at the tournament enables the Russian tandem of Rastykus/Yarzutkina to get in the playoff from the top rank in the pool.

Another game with the Russian sportsmen saw the encounter between the representatives of Kuban State Institute of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism and Czestochowa University of Technology (Poland). The Kazan spectators enjoyed an intense contest of both teams that demonstrated a good level of performance. To decide the winners the girls had to play the third set which finished with a 16-14 score. Anastasia Vorotnikova and Oksana Vakulenko placed second in their pool.

The neighboring court saw the game between the women’s teams of the University of Malaga (Spain) and the University of Porto (Portugal). The Esteves sisters from Portugal lost the match to Spiriakova/Bryk from Krasnodar yesterday but earned their first European Championship 2-0 win. As a result all the pool B teams were level on points. To decide the ranking the teams had to count the difference of balls lost and won. The Portuguese students had the best result, the Russians took the second place and the Spanish team closed the group.

The women’s team of the University of Finance and Management in Bialystok showed an excellent game and won Kazan State Finance and Economics Institute (Russia) with a 2-0 score. Unfortunately, the Kazan girls haven’t won any game yet. The duo of Gajewska/Saad from Poland placed first in the pool.

Men’s team of Gazi University (Turkey)

The final game of the first half of the day was played between the men’s teams of Gazi University (Turkey) and Kuban State Institute of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism (Russia). Favorites of the Championship Kucherenko and Krasilnikov posted their third confident win at the Championship. In three meets the Russians didn’t lose a single set and due to an excellent performance they topped the pool.

The preliminary round final games that will define the teams advancing to the playoff will be held on Wednesday. We remind that according to the formula for competition 12 men’s and women’s teams will play off till two defeats.
