New format of shotgun shooting championship 30.06.2010
The European Shotgun Championship will hold the European Shooting Confederation President Cup for the first time ever.
The Super Final of the ESC President Cup was staged for the first time at the European Shotgun Championship. Kazan tested a new format. The tournament involved 8 shooters – two best male athletes, two best female athletes and four men and women juniors that ranked among top 3 in personal standings including the final’s results.
According to the press office of the Russian Shooting Union the Super Final saw the competition of the following participants: women junior Karina Cantarero (Spain), women player Zuzana Stefecekova (Slovakia), men and junior – Alberto and Antonio Fernandez from Spain, Italian Giovanni Pellielo, Derek Barnett from Ireland, Thomas Word from Great Britain and Russian player Denis Izotov. Eight shooters were divided into two teams (four athletes in each) and shoot ten targets with just one cartridge per target. The winners of each team: Giovanni Pellielo (silver winner) and Derek Barnett (bronze winner) had a fight for gold using one cartridge until the first miss.
The reaction of the audience should be noted: unlike traditional finals at the ESC President’s Trophy Super Final the spectators were allowed to express their emotions and actively support the participants. The audience was applauding and clapping rhythmically, tooting horns.
Eventually it was Givanni Pellielo who won the Championship. He won the gold medal adding it to two his silver medals acquired in personal and team standings.
It should be mentioned that this is the first championship of this kind in the history of the world and European championships. The new format is one of the last measures taken to make the shotgun shooting more interesting and entertaining.
