How does beach volleyball sound? 10.07.2010

It sounds ideal. Thanks to Vadim Maslennikov, DJ of the VII European Universities Beach Volleyball Championship.

The main judges of his music are players and spectators and they fell in love with his performance. It’s not just a trivial collection of tracks but a list of songs of the countries-entrants of the tournament. Having heard the familiar songs the athletes can’t help but cheer and sing along. That’s the way the DJ encourages them and helps them not just tune up but get in the right mood.
Thanks to Vadim’s work beach volleyball is not only a game or a team competition but also an excellent spirit and perfect music.

Vadim shared his plans for future and told us what the challenges and advantages of his work are.

- How did you start DJing?
- It all started rather trivially in 1993 at a disco party. So I began to work at different events, concert shows, played a warm-up for stars, in clubs and with young people.

- How did you end up in sports?
- I worked as a sound engineer. In 2004 I was invited to try my hand at the UEFA Champions League in Belgrade. Later in 2006 I was offered to go to Moscow to play at beach volleyball. I tried and it worked out well! In 2008 I got an invitation to go to Sochi and after that I went to Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, etc. At the moment I have a few offers I can’t refuse (laughs)… but let’s keep them bottled up for a while.

- Which one is more interesting: showbiz or sports?
- Frankly speaking I like the organised nature and discipline in sport. If the game is to start at 3pm, it starts at 3pm. Besides it’s interesting to work with a big audience, with the whole stadium. Though I also like to play for young people at different events.

- At the Championship we heard ready compositions and how do you prepare them?
- It’s a long work because I need to search carefully and select proper tracks. Now when the games are over I go home and start a new search for the next event. This Championship features about 1,500 tracks. So you can imagine how long it takes me to complete my work. It seems that it’s so easy and simple to stand there and play music. I need to prove different. What’s the difficulty of my work? It takes a long time to do prep work and music search. It seems that there’s a great amount of music and free access to it but there are few good songs that people like. I need to know other countries. If there are representatives from different nations it’s not an easy task to select their music. But it’s the most enjoyable part of work.

- Can you share the secret of your success?
- My secret lies in the audience. If I do have audience then I’m motivated to work. It’s also important to know the tracks, feel what the audience needs and meet their expectations. People come up and say, «Can you play another track?» (laughs) but they don’t know what track they want. That’s why the most important thing is to satisfy the audience. If it’s so then my day was successful! Screwups, bloopers… all people have them, haven’t they?
The biggest failure is an empty stadium. You can fix techical faults such as electricity but when the stadium is deserted it’s a disaster. The players don’t have any support and I don’t have any motivation.

- What was your most memorable event?
- I worked at a Moscow beach volleyball competition. I haven’t seen such an emotional sight before. There were about 4,500 people there but still the audience was easily controllable. The impact from the crowd was shocking.

- The main thing in your work?
- Just love! I love my job in all its aspects.

- What are your plans for future?
- I’m eager to come and play at the 2013 Universiade and then at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.
