From table tennis to table football 25.06.2010
The European Table Tennis Championship athletes will compete in table football.
In the framework of the 4th European Universities Table Tennis Championship the amateur table football mini-tournament will take place in the Palace of Sports on June 25 and 26. All the Championship participants can enter the competition. This tournament is held as an entertainment for sportsmen and extra opportunity to match strength with each other.
Tournament manager and head of the Tatarstan department of the Russian Table Soccer Federation Aziz Mavlyanov informed that everyone will have a chance to participate including the supporters. “For all comers wishing to partake we may organize an additional tournament. We’ll make the entry list and the tournament table on the spot,” he said.
Four tournaments are scheduled so far: open women’s doubles, open men’s doubles, open mixed doubles, open men’s singles. The results will be announced on June, 26. The winners will be awarded with the prizes from the Tatarstan department of the Russian Table Soccer Federation.
The Nottingham students greeted the tournament with fervour. “If the tournament is not simultaneous with our events we’ll surely take part in it,” Alim Hirji said. “It could be a good chance for us to relax,” Mark Simpson agreed with him. They joked that they might have an opportunity to beat in table football the competitors that they couldn’t defeat in table tennis.
In Europe table tennis is called foosball. Table football can be played by two individuals (singles) and also by four people (doubles). Every table has four rods on each side. In Europe you can find foosball tables practically in any entertainment place.
As for Tatarstan, foosball tables appeared in Kazan only two months ago. The Tatarstan department of the Russian Table Soccer Federation owns five tables two of which have the Italian license and meet the requirements of the International tournaments. The foosball training center is to open in Kazan soon and next year Kazan will host the Russian table football Cup.
