First winners of European Universities Table Tennis Championship 24.06.2010
Orenburg State University athletes became the Champions of the European tournament.
The Championship Men’s final saw the fight between Orenburg State University and Kazan (Volga region) Federal University.
The struggle between the players was titanic. Despite the fact that the match ended with a 3-0 whitewash in favor of the Orenburg team, every game was a narrow win.
The tightest game of the match was the second when Kirill Skachkov from Orenburg encountered Alexander Shibaev from Kazan. Early in the game the Orenburg athlete was behind in the score but then caught up with the Kazan player. In the end it was Kirill Skachkov who took victory with a 3-2 score.
“We were so distressed,” team coach Igor Lezhnev says. “Especially in the second game when we were losing. But we are so overjoyed with victory. There was no other way for us. Table tennis is as popular in Orenburg as football and ice hockey in Kazan: the city officials and the government support this sport. We are happy that yet again we’ve brought international glory to our city,” the champion said.
