Farewell to Kazan 10.07.2010

Five days of stress, disappointment and triumph are gone – the winners of the VII European Universities Beach Volleyball Championship were awarded today.

The closing ceremony of the Championship as well as all the sports events of the tournament was held under boling sun. In the beginning the officials greeted the referee team and the volunteers who helped the athletes on the courts.

The women’s medal ceremony was held by Director General of the Kazan 2013 Executive Committee Vladimir Leonov, EUSA CT Chair Daniela Erni and Russian representative on the FIVB Council Ilya Volodarsky. Amid camera flashes and applause they presented three best women’s tandems with the cups, medals and commemorative diplomas. The Polish duo of Paulina Gajewska/Magdalena Saad from the University of Finance and Management in Bialystok received bronze medals, German pair Friederike Malchow/Lisa Schroder from the University of Potsdam took silver and the Russian tandem of Victoria Rastykus/Daria Yarzutkina from Moscow Institute of Business and Law topped the podium. A special prize was awarded to Polish athlete Edita Weclawek from Czestochowa University of Technology by Deputy Director General of the Kazan 2013 Executive Committee Azat Kadyrov. She also became a Miss VII European Beach Volleyball Championship titleholder. Daria Yarzutkina got a MVP award on her birthday.

President of the Russian Student Sports Union Oleg Matytsin, EUSA EC member Leonz Eder and Counselor-minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Nikolay Plotnikov honored the men’s winners. Swiss Marco Foelmli/Florian Lier from the University of Bern were awarded bronze medals and Raffael Buhler/Andreas Catschegn from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology got silver medals. Sebastian Sobczak/Piotr Janiak from the University of Lodz claimed the top spot on the podium. Andreas Catschegn was named Mr VII European Beach Volleyball Championship.The MVP award went to Sebastian Sobczak.

Oleg Matytsin expressed his gratitude to the Kazan 2013 Executive Committee, the Kazan City Hall and other ministries and departments that had been involved in the tournament management. Leonz Eder made a note of the volunteers’ contribution to the Championship in his speech he made in Russian. Vladimir Leonov declared the Championship closed.

At the end of the closing ceremony the EUSA flag was handed to the students of Malaga University, hosts of the next year Championship.
