27th Summer Universiade, July 6-17 2013, Kazan

Alexander Sladkovsky: The Rakhmaninoff Festival will be postponed until the 2013 Summer Universiade 19.01.2012

«In every city, that we visit during our concert tour, we advertise the 2013 Summer Universiade as a global event that will be hosted by Kazan,» the maestro said

Artistic director and principal conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan Alexander Sladkovsky, who was revealed as the Kazan 2013 Ambassador in late November 2011, admits that the performance of his orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of the Games is not likely to be an option. The maestro has announced about it today during the videoconference dedicated to the plans of the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan for the year 2012.

Since being appointed the Kazan 2013 Ambassador, Alexander Sladkovsky have been conducting the orchestra wearing a jacket with the logo of the 2013 Games. And musicians of the orchestra have been appearing on stage with Kazan 2013-logoed scarves around their necks.

«In every city, that we visit during our concert tour, we advertise the 2013 Summer Universiade as a global event that will be hosted by Kazan. And in every city we emphasise, that Alexander Sladkovsky is the Ambassador for the 2013 Summer Universiade. I’m pretty much doing the same what I’ve been doing before being awarded the title of a Kazan 2013 Ambassador. It’s a responsibility that weighs heavy, of course. But nothing has changed, in fact. The only difference is that now, we’ve legitimately added a short line in all our concert programmes, posters, and all media releases, that as artistic director of State Symphony Orchestra Alexander Sladkovsky was appointed the Kazan 2013 Ambassador,» the maestro said. «By doing this, we are expanding the audience that learn about the 2013 Summer Universiade from us.»

«Our goal is to convey positive energy and enthusiasm to their audiences through music. We are all Kazan 2013 Ambassadors. Throughout a series of concerts, we inform more and more people about the Universiade. Now we are even more actively involved in this activity. It’s our responsibility now,» the maestro said.

Alexander Sladkovsky recalled the time when he had taken part in the Opening/Closing Ceremonies of the Spartakiade of USSR Peoples in 1979. «I was standing there, at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, and watching how Misha the Bear was released into the skies. I know the ins and outs of the event management,  I know how dreary and difficult the event is in terms of preparation and staging. But, of course, if our orchestra will fit into the ceremony and our format will agree with the director’s plan, we are ready to perform at the Opening Ceremony in Kazan,» he said. «Although, I think that it is unlikely to be an option. The venue with such a capacity implies non-live sound. It has a specific nature. Neither of the ceremonies of this kind that I attended in the past few years featured an orchestra performance. It simply will not sound as it should be.»

According to Alexander Sladkovsky, a breath-taking performance must be delivered to astound the multi-thousand audience of the 2013 Games Opening Ceremony. «Much as one would like to, our format is not suitable for a stadium. But being part of the Cultural Universiade programme, we will participate in the Rakhmaninoff Festival which will be postponed from May-June, 2013 to the days of holding the Universiade.  We are currently conducting the talks with musicians and visitors of the Rakhmaninoff Festival so that they would arrive one month later and we would hit the highlight. There are other performers for the Opening/Closing Ceremonies. I don’t doubt that the Opening Ceremony will be very impressive and spectacular. I think that the organisers will easily go without us,» the conductor said.
