The Autonomous Non-commercial Organisation “Executive Directorate of the 27th World University Summer Games in the city of Kazan” shall have the exclusive right to use the following trademarks in a way that’s not intended to violate law (exclusive right to a trademark):
The Kazan Universiade logo represents a vertical rectangular design that comprises words ‘Universiade’, ‘Kazan’, ‘Russia’, ’2013′ and five stars of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), that symbolise five continents. At international level, the logo’s mission is to give a clear and accurate idea where and when the Games will take place.
The logo is reproduced both in combination with the brand sign, the Tulip, and separately, but in strict correspondence with the rules and it cannot be used with minor infractions of the latter.
The brand sign of the 2013 Summer Universiade represents a stylised tulip made in brand colours of FISU and containing the image of the Latin letter ‘U’, which is a mandatory element to brand any sporting event held under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The basis of the brand sign is the so-called floral style of a modern Tatar ornament. In addition, flowers are an essential attribute of summer, a symbol of youth and development, joy and happiness.
The mascot of the 2013 Summer Universiade is Uni the winged snow leopard kitten. The winged snow leopard is the national symbol of the Republic of Tatarstan. Stylised, this creature is represented on the national emblem of Tatarstan.
The slogan of the Kazan Universiade is ‘You are the World’. Since the basic emblem of the Universiade represents the Latin letter ‘U’, then the following spelling is used: ‘U are the World’.
Thus, the motto acquires two meanings: ‘You are the World’ and ‘Universiade is the World’.
The intertwining of five waving lines represents a style forming graphic element used to additionally model brand messages.
Any initiative of illegal use of the Kazan 2013 brand symbols, like sale of illegal merchandise or non-sanctioned ad campaign that exploits the images of the 2013 Summer Universiade, deteriorates the value of the Universiade’s brand, corrupting its integrity. In the end, such activities undermine simultaneously two processes in terms of the successful staging of the Universiade in Kazan:
The functions of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate are not limited to protecting the brand and maintaining its purity and integrity. The Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate contributes to setting working standards related to handling intellectual property and creating in the society a respectful attitude towards intellectual property.
Most people see brand symbols of the 2013 Summer Universiade as the common national wealth and believe that they are eligible to use the Kazan 2013 brand symbols in their marketing initiatives, falsely assuming that this way they “support the Games in Kazan”. But that’s a mistaken opinion. The Kazan 2013 brand symbols are protected by the Russian legislation the same was as any other items of intellectual property are. If a company, private person, state or public organisation have no agreement with the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate, it’s illegal to use the Kazan 2013 brand symbols and give a false impression that advertised goods, services and organisations have a relation to the 2013 Summer Universiade.
The exclusive right to a trademark belongs only to the lawful Copyright Holder, Autonomous Non-Commercial Organisation “Executive Directorate of the 27th World UniUnless permitted by the Copyright Holder, no one shall use any symbols similar to the trademark of the 2013 Summer Universiade for the goods for individualisation of which the trademark was registered, or similar goods if such use causes confusion.
Under Russian law, those who illegally use the Kazan 2013 brand symbols are subject to both administrative disciplinary actions and criminal proceedings.
The measures aimed to protect the Kazan 2013 brand symbols are taken in a close cooperation with law-enforcement bodies. Other agencies that are involved in the trademark protection are the Customs Service, Ministry of the Interior, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare, Office of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, Federal Service for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks, Agency for Intellectual Property Protection that carry out a constant exchange of information for identifying and stopping illegal use of the Kazan 2013 brand symbols on the territory of Russia.
