The USSR Badminton Federation was founded in 1961. In 1974 the Soviet Union became a member of the International Badminton Federation.
Russia is not a traditional badminton nation, Russian badminton players have put their names on the international scene only recently. It happened because the country has entered the international badminton society relatively late. First serious accomplishments are connected with the name of Andrey Antropov who climbed the top USSR and Russian podium spots almost 50 times. As for international success, he claimed various honours at various stages of World and European Cups, earned European Championship silver and bronze medals, World Cup final’s bronze. The Russian national badminton team started to get systematic success only recently. The badminton season 2009/2010 was the best in terms of results in more than 50 years of the Russian badminton’s history.
Russian badminton players showed brilliant performance at the 2009 European Championship, winning gold (Nina Vislova/Valeria Sorokina), silver (Anastasia Russkikh/Petya Nedelcheva(BUL)) and bronze (Ella Dil) medals. In 2012 Vladimir Ivanov won one of the most prestigious stages of the Grand Prix series – USA Open. Prior to the London 2012 Olympics, Team Russia earned five berths in all five categories. In London, Nina Vislova and Valeria Sorokina took first badminton bronze medal for the national team. 

Badminton came to Kazan in 1961. Yury Chaplygin, a businessman from Kazan, was appointed President of Tatarstan’s Badminton Federation in 2010. Changes were made to the federation’s structure in 2011, when the Badminton Federation Supervisory Board was established to facilitate promotion of badminton in the Republic of Tatarstan. Alexey Demidov, Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of the Republic of Tatarstan, was chosen to head the new entity.
Badminton’s popularity in the republic grows rapidly every year. 2011 saw a dramatic increase in the number of people playing badminton in Tatarstan, from 1,600 in January to 4,300 at the end of the year.
Tatarstan badminton players’ first success on the international sports scene came with the name of Viktoria Vorobyeva. In 2012 she won several international championships in Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. She is currently gearing up to take part in the 2012 BWF World Junior Championships in Japan.
