As an optional sport, sambo was included in the programme of the 2013 Summer Universiade for the first time.

Currently sambo enters the list of mass sports in Russia. Thanks to its availability (it doesn't require expensive sports facilities or outfit) and its role in the society's life, sambo is developing in 72 federal regions of Russia. Over 400,000 people do sambo these days. Over 150 competitions are held annually for children, young people, men, women, veterans at the nationwide level. Special importance is attached to such high-profile sambo events as the Russian President's Cup, Pobeda International Youth Tournament for teams from the hero-cities of Russia, Chumakov Memorial Sambo Team Championship. Sambo's birthday, November 16th, has been celebrated in most cities of Russia, from Kamchatka to Kaliningrad, since 2008.
It's possibly one of few sports invented in Russia that gained popularity not only within the country but in 84 countries of the world.
Our athletes are among the world's strongest sambo wrestlers in most weight categories. Such sambo wrestlers as eleven-time world champions Murat Khasanov and Irina Rodina, seven-time world champion Rais Ralhmatullin, six-time world champions Sergey Lopovok and Svetlana Galyant, four-time world MMA champion Fedor Emelianenko, winners of the first World Martial Arts Games Marianna Alieva, Ekaterina Onoprienko and Bair Omoktuev (combat sambo) made great contribution to the sport's development and popularisation.
The All-Russian Sambo Federation is the member of the Olympic Committee of Russia, and together with the International Amateur Sambo Federation (FIAS) it works hard to make sambo part of the international Olympic movement.
The All-Russian Sambo Federation was created on July 14th, 1990 with the aim of developing, promoting and popularising sambo in the Russian Federation, strengthening its status and enhancing its image on the international sports scene.

Sambo reached the peak of its growth in the 1980-1990s.
It was the epoch of the Madyarov brothers. Farid Madyarov, Master of Sport (judo) and Master of Sport International Level (judo), planted the seed of love for sports in the hearts of his younger brothers. He was recognised as the best coach of 1975-1977. Being a coach, Farid Madyarov trained eight masters of sport international level and large number of masters of sport.
Naip Madyarov is Master of Sport International Level (sambo), Master of Sport (judo). From 1981 to 1984 he was member of the USSR national team and took the World Cup and silver of the world championship.
Rafik Madyarov reached the Master of Sport International Level title and Master of Sport (sambo). His highest accomplishment is second place at the 1982 World Championship.
Nafik Madyarov was Master of Sport International Level (sambo), Master of Sport (judo). His top achievement is bronze of the 1983 World Cup.
Farikh Madyarov and Rashid Madyarov are Masters of Sport (sambo).
Sambo's rapid development in 1990s is connected with the lapse made in the international sambo competition regulations. Sports managers of Tatarstan negotiated the possibility of the republican team's participation in the international competitions as a separate team. As a result, our judokas were quite successful in sambo which is stylistically similar to judo. Top sambo wrestlers of Tatarstan of that time are Zulfia Garipova, Sergey Alekhanov, Danil Antisin, Natalya Ascheulova, Aleksey Kukharenko.
