Kazan volunteers begin work at World Judo Championships

Based on their contributions to hosting sporting events in the spring-summer 2014, ten Kazan volunteers were selected by the Executive Directorate for Sports Projects to undergo internship at the 2014 edition of the World Judo Championships that kick off in Chelyabinsk, the capital of the Southern Urals, on August 25. For the first time ever, the international tournament in this sport will be held in Russia.

The internship is organised under the volunteer motivation, reward and recognition programme. The number of hours contributed through volunteering at the 2014 sporting and non-sporting events, command of English and other foreign languages, as well as international volunteer experience were the major criteria for being selected into the team. The following volunteers were chosen for the programme: Kirill Andreyanov, Alia Zamaldinova, Albina Gilazutdinova, Mikhail Isaev, Elvira Karimova, Adelina Kuzina, Anastasia Novichenko, Dinara Khairutdinova, Timur Khasanov, Enzhe Yagfarova, as well as Lead Manager of the Volunteer Department at the Executive Directorate for Sports Projects, Ayrat Mubarakshin.

The Tatarstan volunteers travelled and worked at an impressive number of international events, among them the 27th Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan, 22nd Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi, 11th Paralympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi, IAAF World Championships 2013 in Moscow and others. In addition, the volunteers lent a helping hand in an array of major international events hosted in Kazan: INTERSPORT European Championships, National Championships WorldSkills Russia, IWF Junior World Championships, World Fencing Championships, FINA High Diving World Cup and others.

Taking into account the Kazan volunteers' impressive experience and a high level of language proficiency, OC representatives responsible for the volunteer programme assigned them to key positions. The Kazan volunteers will support the event in the following functional areas: Team Attaché, Arrival & Departure, Field of Play, Transportation, Volunteer Management. The internship will last from August 22 to September 1, 2014.

The World Judo Championships will be Tatarstan volunteers' second internship in 2014. After the 2013 Summer Universiade, there were quite a few internships, including the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, World Combat Games in St. Petersburg (both in 2013) and the FIFA World Cup in Brazil (in 2014). In addition, it is important to note that Kazan has traditionally been the major attraction for volunteers from all over Russia - this year the sports capital of Russia welcomed more than 150 young people from volunteer centres of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Samara, Kirov, Yoshkar-Ola and other cities.
