World Fencing Championships: Team Russia tops overall medal count

Fencers of the Russian national team finished atop the overall medal standings at the World Fencing Championships that took place in the Tennis Academy, Kazan between July 15 and 23. A total of 12 sets of medals were contested. The host nation climbed the top spot of podium three times, Italy and France boast three gold medals as well, the USA, Germany and Ukraine have one gold each. Two national teams at once won the same number of medals - Russia and Italy took 8 medals (3-1-4) but the Russian fencers scored the most points - 378 against 352. France gained 7 medals (3-1-3). The medals were won by 13 national teams overall.

"It's great to be first in the overall medal standings. We missed out on some medals but even so we managed to win the medal table. It's a good ending of the season," said Ilgar Mamedov, the head coach of the Russian national team.

The closing day of the fencing tournament was headlined by the men's and women's epee. Russia was unbeatable in the women's event. By winning the team epee final, the Russian female fencers made up for a disappointing performance in the individual event and took the world title for the second consecutive year.

In the round of 16, the Russians beat Hong Kong but were on the brink of elimination in the quarterfinal. With 29-29 on the scoreboard, Lyubov SHUTOVA achieved the decisive hit and propelled the national team to the semifinal. After that the hosts took a beautiful win against Hungary, 31-24, and gave no chance to Estonia in the final bout, 40-29.

"We are very grateful to our fans for support. Our phones have not stopped ringing congratulating us on the victory. Thank you for cheering us up, for supporting us. It was of great help to us," Lyubov Shutova, Violetta Kolobova, Yana Zvereva and Tatiana Gudkova said in their post-final interview.

This victory allowed the Russian national team to overcome Italy in the medal count.

In the men's event gold was claimed by the French fencers who earlier took the top podium spot in the individual event as well. Led by Ulrich ROBEIRI, France managed to beat Israel, then grabbed victory in a meet against Italy, broke Switzerland's resistance in the semi and eventually defeated Korea in the final bout.

The Russian men's epee team made a good step forward compared to the last year's world championships. Back then they placed only 13th and in Kazan they made it to the top 4. In the semifinal Anton AVDEEV, Pavel SUKHOV and Sergey KHODOS lost to Korea and in the bronze medal match they were narrowly beaten by the Swiss team.
