World Fencing Championships: Another gold medal for Italy

The women's epee final took place today at the World Fencing Championships in Kazan.

The first bout of the women's individual epee almost ended in a front-page splash. Kristina KUUSK (EST) was a step away from beating the number one seed of the tournament, Ana Maria BRANZA (ROU), last year's world champion. She was in the lead, 9-6, and gave the opponent a run for her money. Another disappointment came with the defeat of the 2009 world champion Lyubov SHUTOVA (RUS). She lost to Eunsook CHOI (KOR), 9-10, and couldn't continue her quest for medals.

"I failed to control my nerves. I was all on edge at the beginning of the bout but I think all athletes feel the same. I let her dominate the strip. I knew what I was supposed to do and how but I was helpless on the piste," the Russian fencer commented on her performance.

The number six seed of the tournament, Yana ZVEREVA, and Courtney HURLEY (No 5) suffered defeats in the round of 32. They were later joined by last year's world champion Julia BELJAJEVA (EST) who dropped the bout to her teammate Erika KIRPU, 9-15. The rest of Russian epee fencers were eliminated in the table of 16. Violetta KOLOBOVA failed to put up a good fight against Rosella FIAMINGO (ITA), 15-7.

Britta HEIDEMANN (GER) surprised everyone in the quarterfinal by beating Emese SZASZ (HUN), 15-14. FIAMINGO defeated Irina EMBRICH (EST) in a nail-biter and advanced to the semifinal where she was about to take on Yana SHEMYAKINA (UKR). And yet another Estonian fencer managed to fence her way onto the podium. Despite losing to HEIDEMANN in the semi, Erika KIRPU claimed the women's epee bronze.

Rosella FIAMINGO was in a better shape in the dramatic final tussle. She was losing for most of the bout and at some point HEIDEMANN's lead reached three points, 6-3. However, Rosella managed to change her tactic and it paid off. She produced a more confident performance in the second half of the bout and it helped her to win, 15-11.

The Italian fencers collected their second gold at the World Fencing Championships in Kazan. Earlier, Arianna ERRIGO took the title in the women's foil.
