Russian University Canoe Sprint Championship underway in Kazan

The Russian University Canoe Sprint Championship is taking place these days in Kazan, the host city for the 27th Summer Universiade. The competitions are held at the Rowing Centre located on Lake Kaban.


Nikolay Mordvin, manager of the competitions, revealed that the championship brought together 104 athletes representing 25 higher education institutions across Russia. "The competitions represent qualification rounds for the World University Championships due to be held in Kazan in August," he said. "Our competition decides number ones in singles and doubles. These athletes will participate in the training camp and make up crews that will take part in the WUC."

Nikolay Mordvin also mentioned the athletes' high level of physical fitness. According to him, the rowers that are staying in Kazan over the next couple of days were among candidates to the Russian national rowing team for the London 2012 Games. Two of those who qualified - Natalya Lobova and Oleg Zhestkov - are already included in the national squad for the World University Championship.

All the rest have equel chances to win. "It all depends on the wind," joked Sergey Bakhorkin, No 2 of the men's K2 squad from St. Petersburg, while getting ready for tomorrow's heats. And the first competition day saw the men's 1000m and 500m semifinals (C and K) and women's 500m semifinals (K). Winners in the above-mentioned events will be determined tomorrow in the first half of the day and the afternoon will see student-athletes engage in the 200m events.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for August 1st. It is expected that Russia's Deputy Minister of Sports Yury Nagorhykh and Minister of Youth, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Tatarstan will also be attending the event.
