Kudinova: The Russian rugby team left no chances for Italy in the second half of the final

Captain of the Russian rugby team Nadezhda Kudinova told reporters that the Universiade women’s rugby 7 final was difficult for her team, but they managed to gather themselves together in the second half and didn’t leave any chances for the Italian team to win.

The Russian team defeated the Italians with a score of 30:10 at the rugby 7 finals on Wednesday in Kazan.

“The final was very stressful. Italy is a powerful opponent and the game was the hardest for us at the tournament. We knew that the Italian team played well together and had a lot of experience already, so we entered the game prepared. Playing rugby four days in a row on this (artificial) field and in such heat is fairly tough and your fatigue starts to show. All that aside, we pulled ourselves together in the second half and didn’t leave the Italians any chances,” Kudinova told reporters. “We won over the opponents with our speed, we have a lot of runners. What can I say, we’re all runners! When the ball got to the edges, they could get there very quickly. All of the Italians just play “tag”, and that makes for a sticky game.” Kudinova also noted that the team stopped doubting it would win the tournament right after the games started, “Of course, we were fully prepared for the Games. When we arrived and saw the athletes on the other teams, we were possibly a little doubtful, but when we met on the field we knew the gold would be ours.”
