The train carrying the team of the 27th Summer Universiade Torch Relay set off on its epic journey to the Games on May 13. The intervals between cities will now become shorter; the Flame will stay in each city only a few days before moving on to a new destination.

The Torch Relay of the 27th World University Summer Games has kicked off as we speak in Volgograd. The Flame of the 2013 Summer Universiade will be carried through the streets and squares of the Hero City by 42 best university students of the region. The Torch Relay started immediately after the completion of the spectacular Victory Day Parade in Square of Fallen Fighters (Pavshikh Bortsov Square). The Flame Keepers – students of Siberian Federal University – handed the Universiade Torch over to Governor of the Volgograd Region Sergei Bozhenov who gave a welcome speech to the people that gathered in the square to celebrate Victory Day.

On 8 May, the day before the entire nation will be celebrating Victory Day, the Flame of the 27th World University Games reached Volgograd, the Hero City that became famous for its resistance during the the Great Patriotic War. The Universiade Torch was delivered here from Krasnoyarsk. The Flame was given a warm welcome at the Volgograd airport. The honour of handing the Torch over to the Hero City was granted to the 21-year-old student of Siberian Federal University Aleksandr Potapenko, who answered journalists' questions straight after he landed in Volgograd.

On May 9, on the day when the entire country will be celebrating the 68th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, the Hero City of Volgograd will give a warm welcome to the Flame of the 27th Summer Universiade. It will be the 5th city to greet the Universiade Torch Relay on Russian soil.
