Kukmor, Bogatye Saby, Baltasi, and Arsk host Universiade Torch Relay

On June 28, a total of four municipal districts of the Republic of Tatarstan took part in the Torch Relay of the 27th Summer Universiade: the residents of Kukmor, Bogatye Saby, Baltasi and Arsk met the main symbol of the Summer Universiade.

The Torch Relay in Kukmor kicked off in the square at the Olymp Ice Palace and ended in the Victory Park. 17 residents were honoured to carry the Universiade Flame through the streets of the town. The last Torchbearer was Head of the Kukmorsky Municipal District, Rauil Rakhmatullin.

In Bogatye Saby, the Torch Relay kicked off in the square in front of the House of Culture and finished in the square in front of the Agricultural College. Twenty residents of Bogatye Saby, including students, athletes, volunteers, representatives of the town's administration and partner companies of the 2013 Summer Universiade became Torchbearers on this day.

“This Universiade Flame came up to our area. Today I was lucky to become a Torchbearer, and I am very happy because it is a huge honour. The Universiade is the result of your great work,” was the address to the residents made by Head of the Sabinsky Municipal District, Rais Minnikhanov. “Soon Kazan will receive about 13,000 athletes from 170 countries. The Universiade will be a great event in the life of people in our country and all over the world!”

The length of the Torch Relay route in Baltasi was about 1,500 metres, which were divided into 11 legs, by the number of Torchbearers. The Relay finished on the Walk of Fame. The guest of honour was Deputy Minister of Justice of the Republic of Tatarstan, Mukharryam Ibyatov.

“I am very glad that the Universiade Flame, after travelling hundreds of thousands of kilometres, has come to our area. Residents of cities, in which the Torch Relay was held, were happy to take part in this great event, because the Universiade is the result of the valiant work of Tatarstan,” said Deputy Minister of Justice, Mukharryam Ibyatov.

The final town that the Universiade Flame visited that day was Arsk. 30 inhabitants of the town won the proud title of the Torchbearer of the Universiade Torch Relay. The Torch Relay ended at the town stadium, where the main symbol of the World University Games gathered thousands of local citizens. The celebration was attended by Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Tatarstan, Khalil Shaikhutdinov.

“Today the Universiade Flame, which visited dozens of cities around the world, arrived in the blessed land of the Arsky District. We are witnessing a global-scale event. It is nice that this historic event is being held on a momentous day for us – the birthday of our town. The Universiade is a symbol of peace, youth and sports. I am sure that the Universiade will be a huge success, and each of you will take part in it!” said Head of the Arsky Municipal District, Almas Nazirov.

“I am very pleased to be here today at this big festival,” said Khalil Shaikhutdinov. “Today in Kazan the first participants of the World University Games started arriving. After just eight days, this Filame, which is now in Arsk, will light the Universiade Cauldron during the Opening Ceremony of the Universiade. We look forward to seeing you all in Kazan!”

The next cities to be visited by the Universiade Flame will become Bolshaya Atnya, Vysokaya Gora and Pestretsy. The main symbol of the World University Games will arrive there on June 29.

The Universiade Torch Lighting Ceremony took place at Paris-Sorbonne University where the first ‘World Student Games’ were held in 1923. The historic moment in the Torch Relay arrived when the Universiade Flame embarked on a round-the-world voyage aboard the world’s largest bark - the tall ship Sedov. On July 15th, the Torch was handed over to a team of navy cadets – the Keepers of the Universiade Flame. Travelling aboard the bark Sedov, the Torch covered 45,000 nautical miles and repeated the route of greatest sailors of all times.

The Russian leg of the Universiade Torch Relay started off on January 25, on Russian Students' Day. Travelling from east to west, the Flame is carried through Russia’s 30 top student cities such as Khabarovsk, Yakutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Arkhangelsk, Stavropol, Pyatigorsk, Sochi, Rostov-on-Don, Saint Petersburg, Vladimir, Moscow, Perm, Izhevsk, Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Yoshkar-Ola, Cheboksary, Ulyanovsk, Saransk, Penza, Saratov, Samara, Orenburg, Ufa and passes through 43 municipal districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, finishing its odyssey in Kazan on July 6, on the opening day of the 2013 Summer Universiade. 2,013 Torchbearers will carry the Universiade Torch as it will make its way all over the country.
