About torch relay

The Universiade Flame is a symbol of solidarity, friendship and peace among students of the world. The 2013 Summer Universiade Torch Relay is an unprecedented event in the history of World University Games.

The Universiade Torch kindling ceremony took place in Paris-Sorbonne University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, which is quite symbolic as Paris hosted the first ‘World Student Games’ in 1923.

The Universaide Torch Relay will be held over two legs.

In 2012-2013 the four-mast bark Sedov went on a world cruise dedicated to the 1,150th anniversary of Russian statehood and history of the great Russian geographic discoveries. The Universiade Flame stored in a special lantern was placed aboard the bark on July 15, 2012. While on the round-the-world trip, the ship travelled across five continents and covered the estimated distance of over 40,000 kilometres. Exhibitions dedicated to the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade were held aboard the ship and in key ports of call along the way. Navy cadets of Murmansk State Technological University were appointed Keepers of the Universiade Flame and plenipotentiary representatives of the 27th World University Summer Games.

The Russian leg of the Universiade Torch Relay will be held between January and July 2013. The Universiade Torch Relay celebrations will take place in 30 top student cities across Russia, as well as 44 cities and towns of municipal districts of the Republic of Tatarstan. 

The plane with the Flame of the 27th Summer Universiade on board landed in Vladivostok on January 24. A crew member of the bark Sedov, the four-masted tall ship, which had been carrying the Universiade Flame around the world, took a flight to Vladivostok to deliver the Flame ahead of the start of the Torch Relay. On January 25, the Russian leg of the most ambitious Universiade Torch Relay in the history of university sports kicked off from the far eastern shore of Russia.

The Far Eastern Federal University is the first university on the Universiade Torch Relay route. Later on, the route will the see the Universiade Flame visit Khabarovsk and federal universities in Yakutsk and Krasnoyarsk. On May 15, 2013 the Universiade Torch Relay branded train and motorcade will embark on a non-stop journey across cities of Siberia, south and east of Russia, Central Russia and Volga Region. In each city the Torchbearers will carry the Flame through downtown and visit universities included in the route, passing the Torch on every 100-200 metres. Students who achieved outstanding results in sports and social life, A level students, best volunteers, distinguished public figures, university representatives and district administration officials will be selected as Torchbearers for the Universiade Flame.

The Torch Relay will arrive at the Universiade Opening/Closing Ceremonies Stadium on July 6th, 2013 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony.
