Interesting facts


The Universiade in Kazan was a record-setter in just about everything. There was a record number of participants (11,778 athletes), countries represented (160), sports (27), medals events (351), guests and tourists at the Games (more than 150,000 people), spectators (roughly 800,000 people) and TV spectators (more than 3 billion people).

Roughly 800,000 tickets were sold to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the competitions themselves, which is a record for the World University Games.


All members of the national delegations were provided accommodations in the 28 residential buildings located in the Universiade Village. Over the course of the Games 11,742 people from 160 countries were housed in the Village.


11 official receptions were held; 2,966 people attended them.


1,270 performers participated in the Opening Ceremony (7,000 athletes took part in the parade); while 500 performers participated in the Closing Ceremony (4,100 athletes took part in the parade, respectively).


Russia won 292 medals at the Universiade in Kazan—155 gold, 75 silver and 62 bronze.


According to media monitoring during the Universiade, the Games were cited in a positive manner 32,218 times and negatively 360 times in the regional, federal and international media.


The USSR and Russia topped the overall standings 12 times at the Summer Universiades and 18 times at the Winter Universiades. Soviet and Russian athletes won a total of 807 gold medals in the entire history of these competitions.


Volunteers from other cities and countries were accommodated in 4 social mortgage houses provided by the State Public Housing Department (as part of a state affordable housing programme).
