FISU Сonference opened in Kazan

The first plenary session of the FISU Conference “University and Olympic sport: two models – one goal?” started in the conference hall of the Main International Centre (MIC) on July 14 at 9:00.

The aim of the conference is to create a platform for the presentation of scientific reports, exchange of opinions on the problems of university sport and support of researches in this area.

At the opening ceremony, the guests and participants were greeted in Tatar, Russian and English by President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Claude-Louis Galien was the first speakerto address the audience. He marked that there is similarity between the Olympic Games and the Universiade. “Sport is an element of social integration. It stimulates the development of civil consciousness, freedom and justice," emphasized the FISU President.

According to Galien, university sport is a specific area of activity and it has specific problems. In particular, Claude-Louis Galien mentioned the problem of university sport in online-universities and said that a possible solution of this issue may be virtual sport. The FISU President ended his speech with a flaming appeal to the conference participants: “The youth has dreams and aspiration. Don’t clip their wings, they ask you.”

The second speaker was Doctor of Education, State Secretary, Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Natalia Parshikova. “The advantage of a university sport model is that it doesn’t require amendments to the legislation and establishment of temporary provisions. We successfully use the Universiade model for the development of sport in the country and increasing the life quality of citizens," told Parshikova. "Everyone marks with gratitude that holding great sport events is a positive investment into the state’s life. Kazan citizens tell: it became comfortably to live in this city." Also the Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation focused attention to the fact that the further development of sport among students is possible only in case the state hosting the Universiade is interested in the Universiade to be a push for the development of sport within its country.

The third speaker, the Vice-President of the International Committee of the French Committee named after Pierre de Coubertin Jean Durry proposed to think whether the aim of university and Olympic sport is the same or their aims differ. In the opinion of Durry, the view of history and reference to sources of modern sport may help to answer this question. “Roads of Olympic and university sport have been divided but from both sides there remained a wish to find things in common,” he marked.

As was reported earlier, a scientific conference is a traditional event of the FISU, beginning from 1960. The conference is organised also as pty of the 27th Summer Universiade 2013.
